Darby was named after its Postmaster by the name
of James Darby. When
it was established in the 1800s it was a stop over for the
ranchers and loggers. It
had only a store and a Post Office.
Darby survived three
fires that destroyed its main street. It is known now for
its fun antique and candy stores and as a fun place to bring
guests and friends. It is now a thriving little town at the
Southern most end of the Valley.
Darby Montana is known for
Logger Days and small town good looks on a western theme.
There is a new library and a new fire hall. The high school
runs on bio-mass fuel which uses wood chips to heat the
entire school. This state of the art system saves the
taxpayers hundreds of dollars on utility bills.
Habitat for Humanity of
Ravalli County is building a home in Darby, Montana. Lots of
local volunteers will make a home come true for one Darby
family in 2007.
Great fishing up the East
Fork and West Fork of the Bitterroot River, south of Darby
Montana, entice sportsperson's all summer long. Winter
skiing is a short drive up to Lost Trail Powder Mountain Ski
Area. Log homes peek out among the dense trees and the views
are incredible.
