Florence Montana, less than twenty
minutes south of Missoula, is a small town surrounded by
two-hundred-year-old cattle and horse ranches, thick forests
and a growing mixture of new and older homes.
Florence Montana was first established by Mr. A.B. Hammond, who was the owner
of the Missoula Mercantile. He
purchased a great deal of the timber surrounding this area
and built sawmills. This
is when it started to
really develop into a town.
It was first called “One
Horse” but was later changed to
Florence
, named after Hammond
’s wife, whose name was
Florence. Florence
was not only a lumber town but it also was the hub for
mining and fruit production, as was most of the valley
during the apple boom days.
